“

What happens when AI-powered restoration systems hallucinate memory rather than recover it?

”

This project explores algorithmic image "restoration" as epistemic violence. Aura Restoration Index processes 2,000 Korean institutional archive photographs through AI. Network analysis identifies "marginalized images"—photos with no visual analogues—then overwrites these outliers via statistical interpolations from Western training datasets. Visitors witness erasure of aesthetic singularity through algorithmic averaging on forensic-style interfaces.
Machine Appreciation System subverts 1970s visual literacy programs. Visitors arrange archival photo cards into narratives, triggering GPT-generated reflections. The output: syntactically elegant yet semantically void commentary—hallucinated semiotics as insight. Program records viewer choices, feeding confusion back as recursive training data.
The interface multiplies ambiguity: Who reads whom? Who trains whom? Cultural memory becomes continuously misread, re-coded, instrumentalized rather than preserved. [Core Question] What are the politics of algorithmic care when archival peripheries are forcibly normalized? Can speculative AI systems function as critical mirrors? This installation critiques automation-as-care by staging failure as form—an unfolding malfunction testing computational empathy's limits.

Aura.exe : This Image Dose Not Exist

"The art of fixing a shadow," as W.H.F. Talbot described early photography, captured not merely light and dark but the magical process of making the ephemeral eternal. Today, as photographs dissolve into data streams and pixels become probability calculations, this project interrogates what happens when AI claims to "restore" cultural memory. Through the fictional profession of an "AI Photo Restorer," I explore how algorithmic intervention doesn't preserve but fundamentally rewrites visual history.

This project emerged from working with 2,000 photographs from the Seoul Museum of Photography's collection—Korean documentary and artistic works spanning decades. Rather than accepting AI's promise of restoration, I ask: What epistemic violence occurs when algorithms trained on majoritarian datasets attempt to "complete" Korean visual culture? What happens to marginalized aesthetics when computational imperialism replaces archival care?

The installation consists of two interconnected systems that stage restoration as calculated failure. Each component reveals how AI's "nonconscious cognition" (Hayles) transforms unique visual expressions into statistical probabilities, replacing cultural specificity with algorithmic universalism.

“
Some life on Earth is rapidly disappearing. Is it possible for human technology to develop in a non-anthropocentric way?”

Can technology exist to prevent the Anthropocene crisis? The increasing processing speed and performance of graphics cards every year only contributes to the mass production of the virtual currency market, deepfake technology, and gossip for fake news. When environmental changes are inevitable, what are some practical actions that would be a possible or impossible solution using human-centered technology?

This project aims to provide a new perspective on the reason for the existence of technology and its value by appropriating human-centered technology that runs parallel to the various life forms on Earth. This mother bird drone, which is modeled after the kestrel by adapting to the city and increasing the population, is equipped with a visual recognition model of the hawk-kestrel, providing new education to other city resident birds to adapt to the city. Through the work, the Ai technology reconstructs the human/non-human relationship as an algorithm and functions as a third party that coordinates the relationship between the two.

	Kestrel Drone

Bird Ai project is an extension of the game “Scope of the Clouds (2021)" . The creation of the drone was based on real Urban Air Mobility policy, a study on the problem of collision with birds.

Kestrel Drone: A mother bird Ai drone for birds living in Seoul.

The Kestrel Drone project reimagines drone technology through ecological aesthetics, addressing global environmental challenges. Inspired by a speculative scenario where birds become primary users of drone technology, it explores how drones and birds can coexist by sharing air routes. The Kestrel Drone mimics kestrels, a bird of prey, to guide and protect resident birds in urban environments. Equipped with bird-like wings and an AI tracker, it flaps its wings and emits sounds to simulate a parent bird, fostering safety and community among avian species.

The design draws from biological studies of bird interactions. Birds often learn songs of other species, creating communication and mutual aid networks. When predators are near, birds emit high-frequency warning calls. Leveraging these behaviors, the Kestrel Drone incorporates the shape, sound, and movement of kestrels, using their wing design as a motif. It also builds on research into bird flight mechanics, replicating flapping motions.

Beyond technical achievements, the Kestrel Drone challenges anthropocentric values by envisioning technology serving non-human species. It expands AI possibilities, transforming it into a tool with parallel values that coexist with ecological systems. The project critiques human environmental impact, particularly urban infrastructure dangers to bird populations. By simulating a guiding bird, it aims to reduce bird strikes and foster human-wildlife coexistence.

The Young Bird Care Center project employs the Kestrel Drone, a robotic drone modeled after the kestrel, a natural monument whose population has adapted and increased in human environments, to serve as a caretaker for sedentarizing the common tern, a migratory bird. The artwork presents a worldview where humans and technology collaboratively nurture and care for nature. It questions the existence and value of human-centric technology that runs parallel to the diverse lives on Earth
